- Steam reforming à endothermic conversion of methane and water vapour into hydrogen and carbon monoxide

- Hydrogen àpyrolysis or gasification of biomass (agricultural residues, MSW incl. plastics, grease, energy crops)
- Pyrolysis à produces bio-oil. Its components can be separated into chemicals and fuels, including hydrogen
- Gasification à mature technology
Hydrogen production from algae
Photobiological process
- Hydrogen à could be produced from water using sunlight and microorganisms, such as green algae and cyanobacteria (as part of their metabolic processes)
